The History of the Israeli Holstein
The Israeli Holstein traces its origins to 1921, when the first Holstein-Friesian cattle were imported from the Netherlands. These animals were initially crossed with local Damascus and Baladi cattle, before breeding gradually shifted toward a predominantly Holstein population.
Over the following decades, Israel implemented one of the world's most advanced dairy breeding programs, using detailed performance records, artificial insemination, and later genomic selection. The breeding program focused on increasing milk yield, fertility, longevity, udder health, disease resistance, and, most importantly, adaptation to hot and arid climates.
The result is the Israeli Holstein, a globally recognized dairy cow that combines exceptional productivity with remarkable resilience to heat stress.
Israeli Dairy System
Nearly 100% of the milk used to produce Israel's fresh dairy products, including drinking milk, cheese, and yogurt, comes from the Israeli Holstein. Around 40,000 Israeli Holstein cows, raised on approximately 620 dairy farms, produce the milk supplied to Israel's leading dairy companies, which process, manufacture, and market dairy products nationwide. Across all 620 dairy farms in Israel, every cow is bred exclusively through artificial insemination using frozen semen as part of the Israeli national breeding program. This ensures a reliable, year-round supply of fresh, high-quality dairy products for the entire country.

During every milking session, data is collected from each cow, and virtually every aspect of her health, activity, production, and behavior is continuously monitored.
